The Wounded Healer
Here hangs the figure of the dying Jesus. The initials INRI stand for the Latin words "Jesous Nazarenos Rex Judaeorum, Jesus of Nazareth, King of the Jews." Mockingly, Pontius Pilate, the Roman governor who sentenced Jesus, affixed the sign above His head, to irritate the Jews who demanded his death.
The crucifixion of Jesus was outrageous. Nailed to the rough cross was the sinless Son of God. Pierced through hands and feet, Jesus suffered unspeakable agony. "Calvarius" was the Latin name and "Golgotha" the Hebrew. Here is where He was murdered, literally at "the place of the skull."
Black was the afternoon when the sky was menacingly darkened, and blackened still was the foul stain of sin and guilt on the evil men who perpetrated such a vicious deed. All of this indescribable horror Jesus lovingly and sacrificially accepted as the will of God, His Father: "Not my will, but Thine be done."
His first words as the spikes were driven through His Quivering flesh were "Father, forgive them, for they don't know what they are doing!" His last utterance three hours later was, "Father, into Thy hands I commend my spirit." Think of it! The first word was "Father" and the last was also "Father." What sublime, serene confidence!
Why was Jesus ever on the Cross at all? He could have escaped. Only the day before, refusing the help of those who wanted to defend Him by force, He said, "Don't you think that I could ask my Father, and He would give me presently more than twelve legions of angels?"
Why did Jesus endure all this? He did it because He loved us so. Why did God allow it? Because He too loved us and loves us still. It is love, love, love all the way through. Flowing from the Cross of Calvary is the blood of sacrificial Divine Love, given for us.
The wonderful conclusion is presented to us in the larger panel of this Folder. All is not gloom nor darkness, nor death. The bread, the cup, signifying His body an His blood, the open Bible, and the gleam of the candle, symbol of the streaming radiance of God's love, all tell us of God's amazing Grace and faithfulness. Easter morning followed Jesus' death on the Cross! What shall our response be? Surely this: "Love so amazing, so divine. Demands my soul, my life, my all." God bless you!
